Hidden Dangers in Your Food
Almost all the foods we
eat are processed in some way, but there’s a difference between mechanical
processing and chemical processing.
Mechanical processing is when it is a single ingredient food that has had no
chemicals added, therefore is a real food, but chemical
processing is when foods are made from refined ingredients and artificial
substances. These foods are usually known to the public as “processed food”.
Foods don’t just become processed. Many companies and factories grow and harvest the food then bring it into their big machines to make it “better” for us, to appeal to our senses, and to preserve it. To do all these things, manufactures must add chemicals to the main, natural ingredients. Most companies add artificial sweeteners, coloring agents, preservatives, butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT), sulfites, pesticides, and trans-fats. All these different ingredients add to how these processed foods can be “addictive”.
Since the food can tend to overstimulate the production of dopamine, or the "pleasure" neurotransmitter, it makes your body crave them. Another reason as to how processed foods may be addictive is that, as you know, the altered food we eat has chemicals, and those chemicals can alter certain parts of your brain that are responsible for levels of hunger, thirst, and the body’s natural rhythms and cycles. Along with this, processed foods have shown to be similarly addictive as illicit drugs. Processed foods contain high amounts of trans-fats, sugar, and high fructose corn syrup that can lead into addictions. Basically, many companies alter your food to keep your taste buds on their side.
